NEW PFA BLOG

PFA Saskatchewan has started a new blog chronicling the stories of the animals our volunteers rescue. Inspiring and heart-wrenching, these stories remind us how important PFA's work is, and how fortunate we are to have members, volunteers, donors and foster families so we are able to save so many furry lives. You can find our blog here, though we warn you: once you start reading, you'll be hooked.

DONATIONS NEEDED

It has been a very demanding fall, and PFA's coffers are bare. We are still facing a busy winter, as we try to prevent as many cats as possible from suffering on the streets, enduring hunger and unbearable cold.

Can you help? No donation is too small. And now, our supporters can donate online via PayPal at our website!

We are also in need of cat food donations. Donated food is used in our foster homes and at the Feral Cat Colonies. Please email saskpeoplefornanimals@gmail.com if you are interested in becoming a regular food donor.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS

People for Animals would like to welcome Pat Vogt to the position of President. Pat has been an active member of PFA for many years, and brings compassion and commitment to the role. Our outgoing President, Debbie Sentes, is not only a founding member of PFA, she has been the mainstay of the organization. We are pleased that Debbie will be remaining on the board. We would also like to welcome two new board members, Jody Francais, in the position of Head, Volunteering, and Barb Kasperski, as Secretary. Both Barb and Jody are animal lovers who bring a wealth of real world experience to the board.

SUCCESS STORIES

Bugsy:
Bugsy was spotted on the mean streets of North Central Regina by our feral cat team. He was in absolutely terrible shape - a three-year-old Siamese cross tomcat with a horribly infected eye, torturous ear mites, he was very timid with people. The team began feeding Bugsy, and he became a regular fixture on their route. After several weeks, they had success trapping this poor boy. He was taken to the vet clinic, neutered, treated for his ear mites and eye infection treated. PFA was unsure what to do with Bugsy - should he go to a farm with other, wilder cats, or was he a candidate for foster care? We decided to assess him in a foster home for a few days and see. Within two days with his foster mom, Sarah, Bugsy was purring, rolling over for belly rubs, and very relaxed. His eye is now completely healed, he has no more ear mites, and he is a happy, healthy big boy who is ready for his forever home!

Plastic bag kittens:
These four kittens were found by a community member in a plastic bag in the middle of a downtown park. Barely six weeks old, they had been abandoned and left to die. People for Animals was called, and we placed the kittens together in a foster home. With good food and lots of love, they thrived! All four kittens have now been adopted by approved homes... another happy ending made possible by our members' support for People for Animals and the work we do.

CHALLENGES

During the first week of October, PFA Pet Rescue received urgent calls for help regarding five different litters of newborn kittens. These kittens needed special care as they were too young to be without their mothers. We were able to provide advice and resources for two of the litters where they were being cared for by community members, and we took the other three litters into immediate foster care. Some of these kittens were as young as 10 days old, while others were closer to four or five weeks.

Cases like this make us very grateful for the support we have, not only from our amazing foster homes, but from clinics such as the 24 Hour Veterinary Clinic here in Regina. Several kittens needed attention due to illness and dehydration, and the staff at the 24 Hour Clinic treated them with a great deal of compassion and care. Many thanks to Dr. Just and her staff!

These situations also illustrate the critical importance of spaying and neutering companion animals. If a family can't afford to have their female pet spayed, there are local programs that can help! The Regina Humane Society offers "Beat the Heat", a program that provides free spays to pets of low income Regina residents. Call 522-SPAY for more information. As well, Oberhund Dog Services and Products co-ordinates the "Spay it Forward" program. The idea is taken from the movie Pay It Forward, wherein people perform acts of kindness and ask nothing in return other than that the recipient pass it along." With Spay It Forward, people help low income dog owners spay and neuter their pets, and in return it is hoped the owners will someday do the same. If you would like to contribute to this program, or have an animal that you need to have sterilized, please contact jennifer@oberhund.ca, or go to www.oberhund.ca.
