Background

Life has gotten much more complicated - and expensive - in the years since the pandemic. It's not uncommon for RCR to be contacted by people that have fallen on hard times and had to rehome their pets. This was the case with Mervyn's owner. Unfortunately, the friend he gave Mervyn to mistreated Mervyn and then threw him out on the streets where he lived for several weeks before the original owner contacted us and asked us to help Mervyn. Poor Mervyn was rescued from a camper where he sought shelter but he definitely came with war wounds.

Mervyn had a large, badly infected abscess on his face that had to be cleaned and drained, along with the other standard vet care RCR provides. Mervyn was placed in foster care where he has had time to decompress, heal, and is thriving. He's looking like a brand new cat! Although Mervyn’s original caregiver is sad that he can't take Mervyn back, he knows he needs to focus on himself and to get his life back in order before taking on another pet and is happy that Mervyn has the opportunity to find a loving home through RCR.

Mervyn is a terrific little character who is a delight to his foster family. He loves to play and keeps himself entertained with his toys. Mervyn especially loves chasing strings and playing with the teaser toys. He also burns energy running up and down the stairs, then likes to rest in the bathroom sink or on a window ledge. A typical cat, Mervyn loves boxes, bins and bags and prefers to sleep in one of those over his nice cat bed. He loves to eat and goes crazy for catnip. Sweet Merv has beautiful markings and soft, luxurious fur. He loves pets and scratches but lets you know when he's had enough. He loves to be with people, although he's not a cuddler. Mervyn has been a gentleman and shown respect for his foster sister's space and is patiently waiting to play and hang out with her. A recent interaction with a newborn baby demonstrated that Mervyn is very respectful and non-aggressive when interacting with humans, but he does prefer meeting new people 1-2 at a time.
